Reason to choose Kindle

by Torres on Feb.24, 2010, under Computers and IT

Since Kindle come out for selling, there are so many people  fall in love with it quickly. Why? Let me show you something important what you might be interested.

Saving Money. While the cost of the Kindle up front is steep, in the long run it will pay for itself and save me money if you are a fans of reading books, which may be up to 3 or more books per months. With the free classics available it’s also going to encourage me to expand my reading material, for no additional cost.

Protecting Environment. Many of you may think about the books in your book shelf that maybe read just once after you brought.Do you feel guilty about the trees and other engergy that used to produce the paper books? And even the delivery and other human sources that help to satisfy your reading appetite?

Saving Storage. If you do not have a study for the books where do you put them? In the box? Don’t you think it’s a big problem to find out a book that you want to read again? I know it’s frustrated to search the exact book you want in so many books or piles of books. That’s another reason why people love Kindle.

eInk technology. I love books and using an electronic gadget isn’t the same experience. The new technology has almost eliminated that concern.

Convenience. The Whispernet is great for when you need the next book in a series right away or want to stock up on a few before leaving on a trip. Being able to have several books stored in the Kindle to take along instead of having to pack an extra bag just for my books for a week’s vacation is a huge benefit.

Aging. People who age around 50 need to wear their reading glass. While Kindle can let you choose the size of Character. That would be a boon for you to read easier.

Also you do not need to wait for a book to come out in mass market format.Just get in through wireless.

It’s that attractive to buy a Kindle? Yes, it’s for me. Change from now to have a Kindle.

Sun Microsystems will cut about 6000 jobs

by Torres on Nov.14, 2008, under Computers and IT, Money and Finance, news

Sun Microsystems announced today that it will cut 5,000 to 6,000 jobs to align its costs to deal with the venerable economy. It will be one of the largest tech layoffs this year.

Sun said the layoffs announced today should allow the company to reduce annual costs by $700 million to $800 million, starting in its next full quarter. But it also said it will incur one-time costs of $500 million to $600 million as a result of the layoffs over the next 12 months.

The cuts at Sun had been predicted by some analysts, who were expecting the company to announce significant moves to shore up its business, especially after a Tennessee investment firm recently disclosed that it had bought 21 percent of Sun’s stock. Representatives of Southeastern Asset Management said last month that they planned to have discussions with Sun “and/or third parties” about improving the stock value.

Sun Microsystems is one of several computing companies suffering as companies and individuals spend less on computers. Companies have been forced to cut prices to compete for business as consumers’ purse strings tighten. Earlier this year, Dell announced it would sack 8,800 people.

And Dave Douglas will head a Cloud Computing & Developer Platform division, with cloud-based services including NetBeans and StarOffice.

Acquaintance with Veterans Day, Nov. 11

by Torres on Nov.07, 2008, under Web Design

Next Tuesday, Nov.11 is the Veterans Day. And my birthday is the same day. How do you celebrate Veterans Day? Will you take part in demonstrations, or listen to the speech? Since 1918, people will do that things to commemorate this special holiday. But this festival used to be a defferent name and the significance in the past.

Veterans Day is an American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is celebrated on the same day as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to [United States] national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty. Halloween History

by Torres on Oct.31, 2008, under Web Design

Halloween is always celebrated on 31 October.
Halloween is one of the oldest celebrations in the world, dating back over 2000 years to the time of the Celts who lived in Britain
Halloween is also know by other names:
  All Hallows Eve
  Samhain
  All Hallowtide
  The Feast of the Dead
  The Day of the Dead
Halloween in Welsh is ‘Nos Calan Gaeaf’.
Halloween is correctly spelt as Hallowe’en.
When Christianity came to England and the rest of Europe, 1 November became All Saints Day – a day dedicated to all those saints who didn’t have a special day of their own. They performed a mass called ‘All hallows mass’ and the night before became known as All Hallows E’en and eventually Hallowe’en or Halloween. (continue reading…)

Google Book Search Cost Google $125m

by Torres on Oct.28, 2008, under Computers and IT

Today, Google announced the signing of a settlement agreement in the ongoing copyright litigation over the Google Library Project with the Authors Guild, and the Association of American Publishers.

BBC writes:

Google will establish a non-profit Book Rights Registry to ensure copyrighted works receive compensation via subscription services or ad revenue.

The registry and settlements will cost Google $125m (…)

However, the deal still needs approval from a US district court to resolve the pending lawsuits.

Google on their page on the subject says (my emphasis):

Once this agreement has been approved, you’ll be able to purchase full online access to millions of books. This means you can read an entire book from any Internet-connected computer, simply by logging in to your Book Search account, and it will remain on your electronic bookshelf, so you can come back and access it whenever you want in the future.

If I understand the model Google describes right, then out-of-print books are automatically purchasable (but copyright holders can opt-out), whereas in-print books aren’t (but copyright holders can opt-in).

Not sure, but all that still sounds like there’s DRM involved even when you bought a book. And gelocation as well, as this agreement only affects US users for now, with bad luck for the rest of the world in at least the beginning:

Because this agreement resolves a United States lawsuit, it directly affects only those users who access Book Search in the U.S.; anywhere else, the Book Search experience won’t change. Going forward, we hope to work with international industry groups and individual rightsholders to expand the benefits of this agreement to users around the world.
